Synopsis by Hal Erickson
The Great Frost was an episode of the "Simple Gifts" TV series, originally telecast on New York's PBS outlet WNET. This weekly, 15-minute series offered an overview of several examples of artistic expression. The two artists spotlighted on Great Frost are painter Seymour Chwast and novelist Virginia Woolf. Using translucent panels, Chwast illustrates highlights from Woolf's cross-dressing classic Orlando. This exquisite vignette would make an interesting lead-in to the feature-film version of Orlando, filmed in 1993 with Tilda Swinton in the title role.
