Other than the title (and the fact that the hero takes said advice), this picture has nothing to do with Horace Greeley. Dick Latham (Tom Moore) is the son of a wealthy father (Melbourne MacDowell). Mr. Latham thinks his son is a loafer, so to prove him wrong, Dick heads West, penniless, to make good. He lands in a tough mining town where the sheriff has just been kicked out for displeasing Hugh Godson (Jack Richardson), the man who runs things around those parts. Godson hires Dick as sheriff, thinking the young man will be easily intimidated. But instead Dick cleans up the town and helps out Rosa Crimmins (Ora Carew), whose father owns a ranch, rich in gold, that Godson desperately wants. Dick hears of some gambling going on in the hotel, and he discovers it is his father and some cronies. He tells his father he won't arrest them if they promise to buy Rosa's ranch and not deal with Godson. One interesting aspect of this picture is a somewhat feminist angle -- the character of Rose is a skilled cowgirl, while Dick has no talents whatsoever when it comes to guns, ropes and horses.
