Trade paper Moving Picture World saw the title to this states-rights melodrama as a definite drawback. "Give this picture an exploitation title such as "The Prodigal Devil" or the like, and there's no telling what it will do at the box office," it advised exhibitors. Perhaps the magazine had a point -- the film appealed to the same audiences that flocked to see Shore Acres (which had already been a successful play and didn't need a catchy title). Betty (Ora Carewe) and Corrine (Gloria Joy) are the daughters of a sea captain. One day, a stranger, Samuel Hoyden (Milton Ross), is washed ashore after a storm that wrecked a passenger vessel. Betty and Hoyden fall in love, but a Bible-quoting man whom the villagers view as extremely religious tries to make trouble for the couple. He accuses a kindly but eccentric old gentleman (Walt Whitman) of stealing from Hoyden. He also convinces the sea captain that Hoyden's intentions regarding Betty are not altogether honorable. Finally, a detective comes to town and reveals that this supposed religious fanatic is actually an escaped convict. The kindly, eccentric gentleman turns out to be a benefactor to the community, and Betty and Hoyden happily head for the altar.
