Still unsure of her feelings toward Luke (Scott Patterson), Lorelai (Lauren Graham) goes overboard helping him find a birthday present for his erstwhile sweetheart Rachel (Lisa Ann Hadley). Elsewhere, Rory (Alexis Bledel) is upset that her former beau Dean (Jared Padalecki) is working on a science project with her friend Lane (Keiko Agena). And when yet another mother-daughter argument (this one sparked by mention of Max Medina [Scott Cohen]) causes Rory to run away from home, Lorelai worries that she has raised her daughter to follow her example by never making a romantic commitment to anyone.
