Rory's dad, Christopher (David Sutcliffe), arrives in town with his new girlfriend, Sherrie (Madchen Amick). Hoping to be friends with Rory (Alexis Bledel), Sherrie arranges a meeting -- on Friday night, which is traditionally when Rory is obliged to dine with her grandparents, Emily (Kelly Bishop) and Richard (Edward Herrmann). Out of love for Rory, her mother, Lorelai (Lauren Graham), arranges for her absence from the Friday night dinner without telling Emily the reason. This leads to a volley of angry recriminations, coming to a head when Emily tears into Lorelai for never marrying Christopher.
