Synopsis by Hal Erickson

With only a weekly half hour at its disposal, the Canadian series Gilbert and Sullivan could not offer full, uncut stagings of the duo's famous satirical operettas. Instead, the series offered highlight presentations of the best Gilbert and Sullivan works, often staged in an imaginatively offbeat or unorthodox fashion. The series was co-created by actor Sam Payne, who appeared on-camera as the host, an "unreconstituted Victorian" whose lively commentary led directly into the week's presentation. The six-part Gilbert and Sullivan was seen on Sunday afternoons from January 7 to December 25, 1968.
