Synopsis by Hal Erickson

"Tarkovsky is the greatest of them all. He moves with such naturalness in the room of dreams. He doesn't explain. What should he explain anyhow?" Thus does Ingmar Bergman assess the work of Russian filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky (1932-1986), the man responsible for such hallucinatory masterpieces as Andrei Rublev (1969), Nostalghia (1983) and The Sacrifice (1986). As indicated by this documentary's title, The Genius, The Man the Legend concentrates on the high-water marks of Tarkovsky's career, glossing over the too-precious self-indulgence of his final years.
