Synopsis by Hal Erickson

With several major American newspapers regularly publishing announcements of homosexual "commitment ceremonies" in the early years in the 21st century, it was only natural that this phenomenon serve as the subject of a cable-TV miniseries. Telecast by the Bravo channel, the eight-episode Gay Weddings followed four couples over a period of five months as they prepared to make their unions legal in a civil ceremony. Amidst the usual hubbub attending this important event, the series did not shirk from tackling the issues arising from these unorthodox (by "straight" standards) ceremonies, especially the often homophobic reactions of the couples' relatives. Withal, the Joyful outweighed the Melancholy on Gay Weddings, which aired from September 2 to 5, 2002.
