Synopsis by Nathan Southern
This epic-length classical music event was mounted and performed in February 2000 to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the death of Johann Sebastian Bach. In it, four acclaimed concert pianists each occupy a unique on-camera venue and perform 12 of the 24 preludes and fugues from Bach's Well Tempered Clavier. By varying the setting and staging, the event provided four unique perspectives on the same music. On hand are Andrei Gavrilov at the New Art Gallery in Walsall, performing Preludes & Fugues Nos. 1-12, Joanna McGregor at the Palau Güell in Barcelona, performing Preludes & Fugues Nos. 2-24, Nikolai Demidenko at the Palazzo Labia in Venice, performing Preludes & Fugues Nos. 1-12, and Angela Hewitt at the Wartburg in Eisenach, Preludes & Fugues Nos. 2-24.
