A full 13 years before the first animal was successfully cloned in Scotland (a ewe named Dolly), making headlines around the world, this prescient documentary by director Ove Nyholm examines the DNA molecule in optic splendor, and then launches into a series of interviews with scientists and doctors who discuss the issue of genetic engineering as well as cloning -- including the cloning of a human being. Although proposing a certain neutrality, Nyholm does seem to favor leaving the human race to its own timeless reproduction methods, and to let the geneticists and politicians and lawyers argue over other pressing problems. Since genetic engineering can also be used to prevent diseases, that entire field will be open to argumentation for long decades to come -- making this documentary an important source of information for anyone interested in the topic.
