The Fox Woman was based on a story by John Luther Long, of Madame Butterfly fame. According to Japanese legend, the Fox Woman was not possessed of a soul. To exist, she was obliged to steal the soul of others. This, essentially, is what happens during the film's four reels, as the titular heroine, the sculptress half-caste niece of an American missionary, proceeds to "extract" the soul of a Japanese artist, who then savagely abuses his wife. The father of the unfortunate wife dedicates the remainder of his life to tracking down and destroying the Fox Woman. The cast of this tidy little melodrama included Signe Auen, aka Seena Owen, in the title role; future director Elmer Clifton as the artist; and Teddy Sampson, the real-life Mrs. Ford Sterling, as the artist's wife.
