In 1939, in the wake of what would prove to be an ill-fated accord between Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin, Germany and Russia made a secret agreement regarding control of their adjacent territories which put Finland under the control of the Soviets. However, Finland refused to cooperate with Germany while they were in alliance with the Nazis, and when the force of the massive Soviet army invaded the tiny nation of Finland near the end of November, the results were startling and unexpected -- Finish resistance forces not only met the Russian army head-on, but managed to fight them to a standstill in the midst of one of the most brutal winters in recorded history. Fire and Ice: The Winter War of Finland and Russia uses historical documents, interviews with historians and survivors of the conflict, and dramatic reenactments to offer a picture of why the Finnish people were so determined to fend off the Russians, and how the inclement weather helped them pull off one of the greatest military upsets of World War II.
