Federal Fugitives (1941)
by Hans J. Wollstein review

A hero suffering from heartburn and a villain who literally gets "the shaft" (as in elevator, that is) are the main ingredients in this well above average thriller-comedy from bottom-of-the-barrel company PRC. Yes, the company's parsimonious production methods are much in evidence, but a good cast plays it tongue-in-cheek and director William Beaudine, who at first had chosen to use the pseudonym of "William X. Crowley," was easily persuaded to retain his true name on the credits. In addition, the young actress bearing the confusing name of Doris Day emerges as a minor revelation, her work opposite leading man Neil Hamilton laced with satire in the time-honored It Happened One Night tradition. A Republic Pictures contract player, she retired after only a few years in films, only to be replaced, so to speak, by another and more enduring Day.
