Synopsis by Clarke Fountain

Tragic love has been a staple of Asian dramas for many centuries, and this Taiwanese feature is true to the form. Ah-ch'eng (Yu An-shun) is a handsome, simple young fellow who has just landed in the big city of Taipei and is working as a waiter. In the course of performing his duties, he cannot help but notice that his beautiful customer Yeh Hsiao-hui (Yuan Chieh-ying) is still around at the end of his shift. He offers to walk her home and they strike up an acquaintance. The fact that she's a prostitute doesn't put a damper on their budding romance, since her motive is to support her ailing father (Wang Yu). After being implicated in an accidental death the couple is forced to go on the run from both the police and the mob. Director Wan Jen makes excellent use of the Taiwanese locations, including some of the seedier parts of the city.
