Synopsis by Eleanor Mannikka
Well-known Mexican actor and director Emilio Fernandez adapted this political drama from a 1947, tell-it-like-it-is stage play by Rodolfo Usigli. The political contents of the drama are based on real-life personae, beginning with demagogue Cesar Rubio (Pedro Armendariz) and extending to several subsidiary characters depicted with an unrelentingly critical brush. The linen of dirty politics gets an airing throughout the film as the tale of Rubio's rise to power and his eventual fall from grace slowly unfolds. Due only to the controversial nature of this movie, it took several years before it was released and even then, several politicians of the day were adamantly against it.
