Synopsis by Bhob Stewart
Sri Lankan director Sumitra Peries directed this adaptation of the short story by G.B. Senanayake. In late colonial Ceylon, as British rule nears its end, pregnant, unwed Thushari (Sangeetha Weeraratne), daughter of a bankrupt businessman, is sent to live in the country with her aunt (Wasanthi Chathurani), who's having an affair with a young man. Thushari's attractive cousin Kusumi (Yasodha Wimaladharma) is attached to Seeladasa (Sanath Gunathilake), so when Seeladasa takes an interest in Thushari, tragedy results. Shown at the 1997 London Film Festival.
