Fed up with skyrocketing crime rates in a local neighborhood, Sgt. Joe Friday (Jack Webb) and Officer Bill Gannon (Harry Morgan) organize a citizen's action committee with surprising results. When the lawmen happen upon a robbery in progress and succeed in arresting the perpetrators, Friday and Gannon win the approval and support of numerous local businessmen. Reeling in the success of their endeavor, Gannon attempts to brighten up his wardrobe and encourages a dour Friday to follow suit.
