Jack Hoxie's first of 36 Westerns for Universal, Don Quickshot of the Rio Grande was based on a 1921 short story by Stephen Chalmer and reads like a Hoot Gibson reject. In typical Gibson fashion, Hoxie plays "Pep" Pepper, a cowboy who is constantly getting fired for daydreaming that he is Don Quixote. (The film opens with a dream sequence in which Hoxie battles an armor-clad Harry Woods.) Falsely accused of killing a bartender, "Don Quickshot," proves his innocence by rescuing lovely Tulip Hellier (Elinor Field) from the real killer (William A. Steele). Famous for his fast cross draw, Hoxie was perhaps a lesser actor than Universal's premiere cowboy ace, Hoot Gibson, but certainly held his own when it came to riding expertise. Like "Broncho Billy" Anderson before him, Jack carried single action Colts on his hips with the butts turned forward.
