Synopsis by Mark Deming

A teenage girl is torn between her family's secretive lifestyle and the lure of the outside world in this drama from Tunisian filmmaker Raja Amari. Aicha (Hafsia Herzi) and Radia (Sondess Belhassen) are two sisters who live with their aging mother (Wassila Dari), who has a powerful distrust of the modern world. The three women share a small basement flat that was the servants' quarters of a forgotten mansion in the country. However, the home isn't as forgotten as they imagined -- a young couple, Salma (Rim El Benna) and Ali (Dhafer L'Abidine), have moved into the house, and young Aicha is eager to learn more about the new arrivals, while thirty-something Radia and her mother warn her to keep her distance. One night, Salma and Ali throw a party for their friends and Aicha can't contain her curiosity. She sneaks into the party and is excited by what she sees, but she unwittingly causes a terrible family secret to be revealed to the new neighbors. Dohawa (aka Buried Secrets) was an official selection at the 2009 Venice International Film Festival.
