Synopsis by Mark Deming

A handful of disparate characters struggle to survive in future that's holds little promise in this dystopian sci-fi drama from Argentinean filmmaker Luis Ortega. At an unknown date in the future, a global catastrophe has killed most of the world's population and left both civilization and the major cities in tatters. Middle aged Rey (Alejandro Urdapilleta) and his younger companion Cielo (Luis Ortega) wander through the wreckage of what was once the city they called home, moving by night in hopes of avoiding the rogue soldiers still on patrol. Eventually Rey and Cielo fall in with a handful of other survivors who have heard there may still be a functioning city on the other side of the Fijman River. Many are eager to cross the river in hopes of finding something better, but there's a catch -- no one can travel to the other side with any of their material belongings. At a time when so many people have lost so much, some of the wanderers are hesitant to leave behind the few things they have left, and Monito (Martina Juncadella), one of the few female survivors, is torn between her desperate need to be with others and her attachment to her meager possessions. Los Santos Sucios (aka The Dirty Saints) was an official selection at the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival.
