Synopsis by Leslie Birdwell

Video artist Peter Rose has created a collaged thesis on the meaning of words and speech. The first of two short videos, Digital Speech is 13 minutes long. Rose takes an old Zen story and reinterprets it, integrating a traveler's story to examine the language, thought, and use of gestures. Pressures of the Text is 17 minutes long and utilizes a host of techniques including sign language, made-up languages, subtitles in ideographic format, and simultaneous translations. Both programs explore meaning/meaninglessness in a postmodern contemplation of boundaries and borders, questioning the nature of communication.
