Synopsis by Eleanor Mannikka

This film is based on a book written during World War II by a young woman (Lore Berger) living in Basel, Switzerland and was published just after she committed suicide at the age of 22. Accompanied by lyric views that illustrate the excerpts read from the book, the film reveals a malaise that gains momentum as life is seen again and again as an unending, dreary round of toil with nothing to alleviate the overwhelming routines of work or study, nothing to truly look forward to, nothing to inspire anyone to continue into the future. The author saw life as a prison sentence and took the only escape her troubled mind could offer. In order to gain some perspective on Berger's attitude, director Beat Kuert interviewed several young women on their own views, and why they think (if they do) that the future is to be dreaded.
