Like The Sound of Music which was about to hit the screens and catapult Julie Andrews to stardom, Die Trapp Familie is based on the same novel by George Hurdalek and memoirs by Baroness Maria von Trapp. But other than excellent music and singing by the actors playing the young Trapp family children, that is where the similarity ends. The story begins with Maria (Ruth Leuwerik) leaving the convent to take up residence in the home of Baron von Trapp (Hans Holt) and his more than half-dozen children. Maria slowly gains the affections of the children and the Baron, and before long her role has changed from single novice nun, to Baroness and mother. With the rise of Nazi power, the Trapp family escapes to America where their career continues on the concert stage.
