Synopsis by Clarke Fountain
In a manner reminiscent of the early case histories of the great Austrian psychiatrist Dr. Sigmund Freud, this picture details the progressive nervous breakdown of a prosperous young executive. Increasingly detached emotionally, he is given to fantasizing about driving around in his fancy car with certain young women from his office. He witnesses several extremely troubling sights, seemingly without any reaction: perhaps these murders and suicides are hallucinations. Eventually, he loses control altogether and takes an axe to his car. His treatment at the hands of the police and the medical authorities is sufficiently awful that his withdrawal from the world, reliving happy moments from his early childhood, seems like a reasonable response to intolerable circumstances.
