Synopsis by Mark Deming

Two strangers fall into a bizarre and mutually abusive relationship in this offbeat German drama. Henry Richter (Simon Boer) is driving home one night when he sees an attractive woman, Anja Steinberg (Annett Renneberg), standing on the walkway of a bridge. Assuming she's a prostitute, Henry offers her money to come back to his apartment, and she accepts. However, after arriving, Henry realizes that Anja isn't a call girl, but was simply lost in thought when he approached her. Anja begins to panic, and after an attempt to rob Henry, he ties her to a chair, puts a stash of illegal drugs in her purse, and demands she entertain him of he'll turn her over to the police. Desperate to stay out of jail, Anja responds by telling a story, hoping it will be compelling enough to meet Henry's expectations. Devot was screened in competition at the 2003 Berlin Film Festival.
