From his birth in Farmersville, Texas to his work with Jimmy Dorsey, Ella Fitzgerald and his career-defining partnership with the Oscar Peterson Trio in the 1950s, Ellis' career is discussed in detail through on-camera interviews with those who knew him best, including Charlie Byrd, Lionel Hampton, Benny Green, and Gene Harris.
