Alan Ladd trades his gangster duds and western garb for the uniform of the Foreign Legion in this Universal-International adventure yarn. Trapped in an ambush only five minutes into the film, the left-for-dead Paul Lartal (Ladd) is nursed back to health by Morjana (Arlene Dahl), the gorgeous daughter of Arab tribal chieftan Khalli (Oscar Beregi). Lartal agrees to help protect Khalli's people against the evil designs of rival chieftan Crito (Richard Conte). Unable to convince his superiors to champion Khalli's cause, Lartal deserts the legion with his faithful sidekick Pvt. Plevko (Akim Tamiroff) and takes on Crito man-to-man. Based on a novel by Georges Arthur Surdez, Desert Legion was coadapted by no less than Irving Wallace, of Lust for Life and People's Almanac fame.
