Synopsis by Hal Erickson

Also known as The Jester and The Jewish Jester, the Polish-filmed Der Purimshpiler is the saga of an itinerant actor (Zygmund Turkow). Our hero loves a girl of comparatively higher social standing. That is to say, the girl's father is a cobbler--a "proper" job. Her family disapproves of the romance, intending to have her marry a man of wealth, so the actor goes to near-impossible lengths to win that approval. Filmed in the Yiddish language, Der Purimshpiler has much in common with the many-years-later American comedy The One and Only (1977).
