Synopsis by Dan Pavlides
The English translation of the title of this color documentary from Sweden is "The Sporting Life." The Davis Cup tennis match of May 3, 1968 in Bastad, Rhodesia is called off due to riots involving protesters and police; the racial segregation of the country was the issue behind the protest. When it planned to proceed with the match anyway, the Swedish tennis association drew the ire of the majority of the Swedish population, and the match was called off. As sporting events are a microcosm of society, there is no doubt that these events cannot be separated from politics when social injustice permeates a society seeking to rectify it's collective ills.
