Synopsis by Sandra Brennan
The persuasive power of religion over those who would accept it without question is seen in this mystical Polish drama set in an isolated village where miracles regularly occur. When the handsome young rookie priest Jakub arrives to take over his first parish, he is not prepared for the strangeness of the town. The longtime resident priest, Andrzej, is already close to madness from it all. Things begin happening soon after Jakub arrives. First a two-ton statue turns 180 degrees overnight, then Grazynka, a local waitress, begins experiencing stigmata, bleeding palms. The almost hysterical religious fervor of the townsfolk is catching and soon Jakub finds himself slowly lured into it. In an impassioned moment, he even sleeps with the waitress. When the palms of another resident begin to bleed, the passion reaches a fevered pitch and bloody mayhem ensues.
