Bruce Brackett, proprietor of a hotel in a New Hampshire village (William Frederic), has earned the nickname "Common Sense Brackett" because of his ability to give helpful advice to other, more emotional, souls. When a theatrical troupe gets stranded in the little village, Brackett marries the leading woman. They have a baby, but the wife tires of her drab life and takes off for Broadway, placing the baby in an orphanage. Brackett goes in search of her and their baby, but never finds either of them. Eventually he adopts an orphan girl and raises her. Sixteen years later, a young lady comes to town to teach dance and Brackett's adopted daughter finds out that she is Brackett's birth daughter. Since she's afraid she will lose Brackett's love, she keeps her discovery to herself. Meanwhile, Brackett is warning his neighbor away from making his spouse a drudge -- something he learned the hard way. His advice averts a scandal, and eventually he is reunited with his birth daughter. This picture was based on the stage play of the same name.
