Synopsis by Mark Deming

While Deep Purple began their career in the mid-1960's as a tuneful progressive rock outfit, in the early 70's they evolved into one of Britain's most powerful hard rock bands, and their 1972 album Machine Head captured Deep Purple at the height of their powers, while also winning them a massive international audience with such songs as "Smoke On The Water", "Highway Star" and "Space Truckin'". Classic Albums: Deep Purple -- Machine Head is a documentary about the making of this landmark in English hard rock, featuring interviews with all five members from the band's classic lineup (Ritchie Blackmore, Ian Gillian, Roger Glover, Jon Lord, and Ian Paice) as they discuss how these classic tunes were written, arranged, and recorded; the film also includes observations from producer and engineer Martin Birch, and a variety of live performance footage and rare television performances.
