Synopsis by Hal Erickson

Capitalizing on the huge success of its first syndicated cartoon effort, Ducktales, Walt Disney Television assembled a companion series for its earlier program, again utilizing familiar Disney animation stars in a brand new format. This time around, the characters chosen were those garrulous chipmunks Chip 'n' Dale, who had been scampering about in a variety of theatrical cartoons and comic books since 1943. Following the lead of Ducktales, Chip 'n' Dale were reconfigured as intrepid adventurers-for-hire, à la Indiana Jones (complete with khaki outfits and battered hats). Headquartered in a hollow tree and flying from one assignment to the other in their Ranger Plane -- actually a hand-made balloon gondola -- the two protagonists dedicated themselves to solving "small" crimes (as small as themselves!) before they became too large to handle. The heroes' assistants included Gadget the mouse, a female weapons specialist and inventor; another, slightly larger mouse named Monterey Jack, who spun tall tales in a thick Australian accent; and the obligatory comic relief, a fly named Zipper. First broadcast on cable's Disney Channel from August 1988 through September of 1989, Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers began its 65-episode syndicated run shortly thereafter, telecast in tandem with Ducktales as a component of the daily "Disney Afternoon" cartoon block.
