review
White actors in blackface are a dubious experience at this late day and age and whatever Freeman Gosden and Charles W. Correll had on radio is completely lost in the transition to the screen. Obviously, folks at the time were curious to see the faces that matched the famous voices, but according to most contemporary reviews, the experience proved unsettling even then. A subplot featuring the likes of Sue Carol (later wife of Alan Ladd), Charles Morton and minor-league femme fatale Rita LaRoy almost comes as a relief.
