synopsis
Caste is set in England rather than India, but you were right if you guessed that the story has something to do with Class Consciousness. Years before playing the dewlapped Mrs. Naugatuck on TV's Maude, Hermione Badderly was a lovely and fragile leading lady. In Caste, she plays a low-born Cockney lass who marries high-born marquis Sebastian Shaw. When her husband is reported killed in World War I, Badderly makes her first visit to her aristocratic in-laws. What follows both tickles the funnybone and breaks the heart. Future director Michael Powell adapted the screenplay of Caste from a play by T. W. Robertson.
