Space Pirate Captain Harlock: Voyage 1: Blues of the Rubbish Heap on AllMovie

This animated feature is compiled from the first two installments of a 42-episode Japanese television series, distributed on U.S. television as Captain Harlock. Based on a comic book created by Matsumoto Leiji, one of Japan's premier cartoonists, the Harlock character has been a part of Japanese animation and comic books for several decades. The futuristic epic, set in the 30th century, depicts the story of a battle-scarred Earth starship captain who is forced to surrender to the alien Illumidas invasion force. Harlock resurfaces as the captain of a space pirate ship, fighting a guerilla war against the invaders. In addition to English-language dubbing, the story in the American release has been heavily edited and varies from the Japanese version.
