Synopsis by Robert Firsching

Kostas Andritsos directed this inspiring Greek film about a heroic woman named Laskarina Bouboulina (Irene Papas) whose husband, a ship's captain, drowns during a voyage. Alone with three children, Laskarina marries another captain, but this one meets his end in a battle with murderous pirates. Struggling to survive both financially and emotionally, Laskarina goes to Odessa, where she joins up with the Filiki Eteria, or "Society of Friends," a rebel group which hopes to beat back the Turkish occupation. Back in her hometown in Spetses, Laskarina joins the Greek Revolution against the Turks, taking part in the sieges on Nafplion and Tripolis. The talented supporting cast includes Dionyssis Papayiannopoulos, Andreas Barkoulis, and Lefteris Vournas, as well as the skilled direction of Andritsos, one of the most technically adept Greek filmmakers of the time.
