Also known as Dancing Vienna, Frederick Zelnik's Bohemian Dancer is frequently cited as Germany's first "sound" picture. The title character, played by Lya Mara, harbors dreams of being accepted in High Society. This thin plot premise allows the director to showcase a number of honored Austrian traditions, including a lengthy and well-photographed fox hunt. Sound in Bohemian Dancer was limited to a musical score and a few sound effects, not all that well synchronized. American critics were more preoccupied with the heroine's resemblance to Clara Bow than to the technological "advances" of The Bohemian Dancer.
