Based on a magazine serial by Gene Markey, this film was turned into a perfect vehicle for Universal's lackadaisical cowboy hero Hoot Gibson. The bespectacled, dandified son of a veteran military officer (DeWitt Jennings), Geoffrey Arbuthnot Islip, nicknamed Blinky Gibson, is the butt of many jokes among his fellow cavalry officers headquartered on the border of Mexico. Until, that is, Blinky singlehandedly rescues the daughter (Esther Ralston) of his commanding officer (Charles K. French) from a kidnapping. Leading lady Esther Ralston later moved over to Paramount and became a popular star of light comedies and elegant dramas. Reminiscing about her early years as a screen actress, Ralston related to this writer how much fun it had been working with Gibson and the Universal cowboys.
