A veteran university professor is hospitalized when he undergoes an operation. A confusing series of flashbacks covers the major events in his life. He has an affair with his best friend's mistress, meets his future bride Sasha, and learns of his mother's death from an airplane bombing raid during the war. Sasha and the professor have to daughters before she precedes him in death. Peter Alexandrov is the patient in this extremely plodding effort.
