Synopsis by Mark Deming

In this drama from acclaimed filmmaker Golam Rabbany Biplob, Haripada (Jayanto Chattopadhyay) is an elderly widower living in rural India who earns his keep as a potter, looks after a young orphan boy he's adopted, and plays the flute in his spare time. Haripada is a self-taught musician who has never earned money for his art, but after he's interviewed by a reporter about folk music, he's invited to perform in Dhaka. Haripada and his son have never been to the city, so he accepts the offer and is soon offered a recording contract by a cultural foundation that specializes in marketing regional music for the mass audience. Haripada quickly finds himself caught up in the machinations of the music business, where he's treaded more as a potentially profitable commodity than as an artist or a human being, and he longs to go back to the simple life he used to lead, but that isn't as simple as he images. Britter Biarey (aka Beyond The Circle) was an official selection at the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival.
