Danish director Michael Noer’s fifth feature film presents an unforgiving portrait of rural 1850s Denmark. Threatened by the risk of starvation over an imminent winter, a struggling old farmer (Jesper Christensen) is forced to choose between selling off his land to another wealthy farmer and marrying off his daughter in exchange for an alliance with a neighbour.
