Iranian filmmaker Majid Majidi directs the independent documentary Paberahne ta Harat (Barefoot to Herat). Shot during 2001 and 2002, the film explores the difficulty of living in the refugee camps of Western Afghanistan after the fall of the Taliban. Following the bombings in cities like Herat and Kandahar, refugee camps quickly filled to capacity with survivors. Camps Makaki, Maslakh, and Zaaranj were already lacking in food and other resources. Maslakh is one of the largest refugee camps in the world, struggling to house more than 150,000 hungry Afghans. Majidi interviews peasants, women, children, and soldiers. Barefoot to Herat was shown at the Venice Film Festival and on Canadian television.
