In the distant and bleak future, Mars has been colonized and resources on the planet are short. People live in domed cities and, without enough rations to go round, a gladiator system has been developed, pitting fighters from various cities against each other with the winner taking the supplies at the end. Layla is one of these fighters and Avenger follows her as she travels with her companions Nei and Speedy. Nei is what is called a "doll," a childlike android created for work and servitude. Speedy is a doll maker, and together, they search for answers about the fate of human life on Mars, as well as themselves.
