Synopsis by Kathryn Tamms
The music of Eastern European Jews -- Ashkenazic music -- includes Yiddish folk songs and theater tunes, klezmer melodies, and the liturgical music of the synagogue. This nostalgic program is one of contrasts, between joy and sadness, sacred and secular, old world and new, as its archival film footage captures images of Eastern European life before World War II. Also featured in this compilation of Eastern European Jewish music are performances by contemporary actors, including Shmuel, Henya, and Anat Atzmon.
