Deprived of the ability to create and produce sound motion pictures at home with any degree of artistic freedom due to the political climate of the time, the Greek cinema moved to Egypt in the late 1930s for a series of five films. There were numerous Greek theatrical troupes traveling the country during this period, so there was no shortage of available actors, although the directorial chores for this one fell to Alevise Orfanelli, an Italian who also wrote and produced, and countryman Bruno Salvi was the cinematographer. Despite being filmed by Italians in Egypt, however, this is undeniably a Greek film both in design and execution, and while it might not be the best of the five films shot in this style, or even a good film, it is undeniable proof that the artistic impulse will find a way to be expressed under even the most difficult of conditions. Paraskevas Economou, Rena Dor, and Yiannis Ioannidis lead the cast.
