Synopsis by Mark Deming

Filmmaker Don Askarian explores life, culture and religion in the shadow of a great landmark in this fusion of drama and documentary. Mount Ararat is a site of no small importance to both Muslims and Christians, and both Turkey and Armenia have claimed the land at various times. These contradictions inform the fourteen episodes that make up the film, which incorporate vignettes based on works by Ivan Bunin and Alexander Delphinov as well as sequences taken from newsreel footage shot in the communities near the mountain which examine greed, crime, conflict, the struggle to survive and the moments of happiness that sustain the people who live there. Ararat -- Fourteen Views was screened in competition at the 2007 Rotterdam International Film Festival.
