Synopsis by Mark Deming
Steve Roden created this experimental animated film as a visual adaptation of a score by Jackson Mac Low and LaMonte Young, created while they were working within the Fluxus movement. The score was written in an unconventional way, using letters and numbers rather than traditional musical notation, and Roden created a visual concordance for the piece, assigning each letter or numeral a color, pattern or manipulation technique for a single frame. The result is a fifteen-and-a-half minute visual collage that turns the music into an abstract kinetic image. Anything Else and/or Nothing At All was screened in competition at the 2007 Rotterdam International Film Festival.
