Backwoods girl Annie Oakley (Barbara Stanwyck) surprises the boastful sharpshooter Toby Walker (Preston Foster) by her own marksmanship, but since she's attracted to him, Annie lets Toby win. Recognizing her skills, Jeff Hogarth (Melvyn Douglas) hires her to star in the Wild West show of his partner, Buffalo Bill (Moroni Olsen), for which Toby already works. Even though Toby and Annie are falling in love, the show's publicist convinces them to pretend to be rivals. She so impresses elderly Sioux war chief Sitting Bull (Chief Thunderbird) that he joins the troupe, too. One night on tour, Toby saves Sitting Bull from an attack and injures his eyes, but he keeps this a secret. During the show, he accidentally wounds Annie; everyone assumes he did this on purpose, and Toby is fired from the show.
