Legendary ballerina Maya Plisetskaya headlined this 1980 Bolshoi Ballet production of composer Rodion Shchedrin's 1971 ballet Anna Karenina, which Shchedrin, in turn, adapted from the seminal 1877 novel by Leo Tolstoy. Plisetskaya did the choreography with Natalia Rizhenko, and dances the lead, with an ensemble that also includes Mikhail Petukhov, Victor Barykin, Nina Sorokina and Anatoly Simachev. The Orchestra and Soloists of the Bolshoi Theatre, under the leadership of Yuri Simonov, provide musical accompaniment.
